The Foundation

Founded through compassion
Grown through commitment

The Antonia Ruut Foundation supports people where long-term assistance can create meaningful change. Our focus lies on sustainable projects that improve living conditions and create new opportunities.

A particular focus is placed on future-oriented solutions – such as supporting solar-powered water wells as a sustainable alternative to diesel-powered systems.

We rely on reliability, clear structures, and targeted support instead of short-term solutions.

Background

Since our foundation at the end of 2005, we have sought to support people in need. Inspired by the desire to make a positive difference in the world, our journey began with a simple idea: helping those who need it most.

Since beginning our operational activities in early 2008, we have dedicated ourselves to combating poverty and inequality. We firmly believe that everyone deserves support, especially where the need is greatest.

The headquarters of our foundation are located in Trier, Germany's oldest city. From here, we plan and coordinate our projects and initiatives to achieve the greatest possible positive impact.

Through our work, we have already made a difference in more than 180 projects worldwide. Our international efforts focus on West Africa, Ethiopia, and Paraguay, while we also support projects in and around Trier.

Partnerships

Creating sustainable projects together

Sustainable change rarely happens alone. Many of our projects are implemented in close cooperation with trusted partners, both locally and internationally. These collaborations allow us to combine expertise, strengthen structures, and develop long-term solutions.

The Antonia Ruut Foundation consciously works with selected organizations that take responsibility and share similar values. The focus is on projects that create lasting impact rather than providing short-term assistance, whether in healthcare, education, development cooperation, or social support.

We place great value on transparency, clear structures, and reliable implementation. We view partnerships as long-term commitments built on trust, mutual understanding, and shared goals.

If you represent an organization, initiative, or project and are interested in collaboration to advance sustainable solutions, we look forward to hearing from you.

Gustav and Antonia Ruut
About our founder

Gustav Ruut

Birth and early life Gustav Ruut, founder of the Antonia Ruut Foundation, was born on August 6, 1923, in Viljandi, Estonia. His early years were shaped by the challenges and upheavals of the Second World War, which eventually brought him to Germany. Meeting and life with Antonia In Germany, Gustav met his future wife Antonia, born on July 3, 1931, in Borghorst, North Rhine-Westphalia. Together, they built a life characterized by hard work and dedication. As textile merchants, they worked tirelessly, leaving little time for holidays and family life. Their marriage remained childless. Loss and new beginnings Antonia's death from cancer in the autumn of 1983 was a defining event in Gustav's life. This profound loss laid the foundation for the idea of establishing the Antonia Ruut Foundation. Career and legacy Gustav Ruut was successful not only locally but also as a textile wholesaler. His business enabled him to build a solid financial foundation for retirement. His passion for the textile trade led him to continue operating his company until his death in late 2006. Heritage and foundation establishment Wishing to preserve and pass on the values and passions he shared with Antonia, Gustav founded the Antonia Ruut Foundation. The foundation serves as the couple's legacy and supports causes that were close to their hearts.

Projects with long-term impact

Agroforestry Training Center
Ethiopia

Agroforestry Training Center

In partnership with GPDA, our project aims to increase the agricultural productivity of 7,000 smallholder farmers, strengthening food security across the region. By expanding cultivated land, improving soil fertility, and promoting crop and seed diversity, we create the foundation for sustainable agricultural growth. Additional income opportunities are generated through local employment, the operation of Farmer Training Centers (FTCs), and the production of bamboo charcoal. Environmental protection is supported through erosion control measures, tree nurseries, reforestation initiatives, biodiversity conservation, and climate-adapted land management practices. These efforts contribute to a stable microclimate and long-term CO₂ reduction. The project promotes sustainable agriculture, food security, and environmental stewardship while creating lasting opportunities for local communities.

Supplying Hospital Ships with Medicines and Equipment
West Africa

Supplying Hospital Ships with Medicines and Equipment

The Antonia Ruut Foundation, Mercy Ships Germany, and action medeor – Germany's Medical Aid Organization – work together to provide medicines and medical supplies for deployment aboard the hospital ships Global Mercy and Africa Mercy. Over the past years, more than 70 deliveries with a total value exceeding €2.5 million have been provided, ensuring access to essential medicines and medical equipment for life-changing healthcare missions.

Digital Management of Decentralized Water Supply
Ethiopia

Digital Management of Decentralized Water Supply

The goal of this project is to ensure long-term access to clean drinking water through digital water management solutions. In cooperation with our local partner GPDA in southern Ethiopia, four solar-powered water distribution stations are being established to provide reliable access to safe drinking water. Both water distribution and system management are digitally supported to ensure efficient operation, monitoring, and maintenance. Revenue generated from water sales at socially affordable prices helps finance regular servicing and repairs, creating a sustainable model for long-term water supply.

Da-Sein Hospice Foundation
Trier

Da-Sein Hospice Foundation

Since 2008, the Antonia Ruut Foundation has supported hospice care in Trier through its partnership with the Da-Sein Hospice Foundation, which is dedicated to improving the quality of life of seriously ill people and their families. Caritas Family Office
Trier

Caritas Family Office

The Caritas Family Office in Trier supports families in applying for social and family-related benefits. The project addresses a common challenge: many families either do not claim the support they are entitled to because they are unaware of their rights or hesitate due to concerns about social stigma. The Caritas Family Office provides comprehensive information, assists with applications, and works closely with the relevant public authorities to ensure families receive the support available to them. Based on the success of a previous pilot initiative, the project is considered an important tool in the fight against poverty. The Antonia Ruut Foundation supports this initiative, which is managed by the Caritas Foundation "People in Need".

Reintegration of Former Offenders
Wittlich

Reintegration of Former Offenders

The Antonia Ruut Foundation supports projects that help former offenders successfully reintegrate into society and build stable futures. Grief Counseling for Prisoners provides social work support and group counseling sessions to reduce the social isolation often experienced by incarcerated individuals dealing with loss and bereavement. Conflict Resolution in Correctional Facilities strengthens mediation and communication skills by training inmates to serve as peer mediators, helping to resolve conflicts constructively and promote a more positive environment. Animal-Assisted Rehabilitation integrates specially trained dogs into rehabilitation and therapy programs. These interactions support physical and mental well-being, enhance cognitive abilities, and strengthen social and emotional skills.

Improving Water Supply in Chimfunshi
Zambia

Improving Water Supply in Chimfunshi

In Chimfunshi, prolonged droughts and declining groundwater levels have led to severe water shortages, crop failures, and health risks caused by contaminated water. More than 70% of local residents lack access to clean drinking water, with children being particularly affected. The project, implemented by the Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage Trust and funded by the Antonia Ruut Foundation, improves access to safe water through the construction of new boreholes, the installation of solar-powered pumps, and the repair of existing water systems. By providing reliable access to clean water, the project enhances living conditions for local communities while also supporting sustainable agricultural development in the region.

Practical Implementation of Environmental Guidelines in Schools
Paraguay

Practical Implementation of Environmental Guidelines in Schools

The project aims to combat poverty and hunger, promote gender equality, strengthen environmental protection, encourage ecological awareness, support digital transformation, and improve access to quality education. These objectives are being implemented at Don Bosco schools as well as two public schools in Paraguay. The initiative includes environmental education conferences, the development of a dedicated educational curriculum for Salesian schools, and the integration of this curriculum into public schools. The long-term goal is to establish environmental education programs across schools throughout Paraguay, empowering future generations to contribute to a more sustainable and responsible society.

ZOP – Mobile Medical Camp
Zanzibar

ZOP – Mobile Medical Camp

With support from the Antonia Ruut Foundation, the Zanzibar Outreach Program received a mobile medical clinic to improve healthcare access for underserved communities, particularly in rural areas. The primary objective of the project is to provide essential healthcare services in regions where medical care is limited or difficult to access. This includes medical treatment, public health education, the integration of patients into the existing healthcare system, and the provision of affordable and recurring healthcare services. The project is expected to benefit approximately 3,200 people each year, helping to improve health outcomes and strengthen access to basic medical care across the region.

The counseling center is unique in the Trier region and provides a wide range of services, including parental counseling, age-appropriate education about illness, and support during end-of-life situations related to cancer.
