This has been quoted time and time again.
Despite its technical complexity, digging a borehole and installing a well as part of a water supply system is easy compared with day to day
management and maintenance, which are essential ingredients for financial viability and a permanent solution.
In a country well know for a lot of sunshine, we decided to use solarenergy to pump water from 80 to 150 meter deep boreholes. Since sunlight is for free, our wells are operated without running costs.
Since sunlight is for free, our wells are operated without running costs. We don´t need expensive diesel-generators.
Seven spots are running at the moment and are each distributing up to 40.000 liters of save drinking water per day. This sustainable watersupply enables additational modules to improve the living conditions of the rural Ethiopians. Our holistic approach contains several components:
Water - pumped up with solar energy (without batteries)
Energy - solarenergy stored in batteries - used for mobile phones, light, etc.
Hygiene - WaSH, laundry, shower (compost or waterbased)
Landscaping - year round food production, soil cultivation, erosion stopping methods
